Heat pumps can be highly efficient in certain climates that do not receive extreme cold weather. The only downside to this type of system is there are coils on the outside, they collect ice. This means that the pump must melt this ice occassionally (especially in very cold weather) switching it to being an air conditioner so the condensor coils heat up. To ensure cold air is not sent into the home, the heat pump will use an electric strip or burners in the inside air handler, thus heating the cold air produced by the air conditioner. (also shown on your thermostat as emergency heat). Then, as the ice finally melts, the switch goes back to the heating side, turning the electrical heat strips or burners off. This is an automatic function in which you usually do not notice. For the air conditioning function, the refrigerant is passed through the coil on the inside. The freon is then evaporated from liquid form to a vapor form. When this happens, it then absorbs heat and the air located around the coil is cooled. Then, the vapor, which is not laden with heat, goes through a compressor. As this occurs, the vapor is highly compressed, which causes the temperature to rise along with pressure. Now, the reversing valve sends the flow of hot, high-pressured vapor to the coil on the outside at which time the heat is released and released back into the outdoor air via the fan motor.
